The Unit Five Education Association annually awards three scholarships to individuals pursuing a career in education — two $1000 Phyllis Rosenbaum Scholarships to Unit 5 students and a $1000 UFEA Scholarship to a high school senior or college student who is the child of a UFEA member.
UFEA also awards a $1000 Impact Scholarship to a student in need of financial assistance who plans to continue their education at a 4-year college, 2-year college, trade school, or in the military. Applicants are asked to describe the impact they want to have on their community and share how educators have impacted them.
Phyllis Rosenbaum Scholarships
The Phyllis Rosenbaum Scholarship is awarded to two high school seniors — one at Normal Community and one at Normal West — who will pursue a career in education. This year’s Phyllis Rosenbaum Scholarship winners were Madison McCraw from NCHS and Marissa Hagler from NCWHS.
Madison plans to major in Education at Illinois State and shared she wants to “teach at a school-in-need … I think every student needs a fair chance at a great education.”
Marissa plans on attending college, obtaining her teaching license and hopefully returning to a Unit 5 school. She shared “I believe…that NCWHS has impacted my dream of teaching and is the reason I am confident in my skills as a future educator.”
UFEA Scholarship
The UFEA Scholarship is awarded to the child of a UFEA member who is a high school senior or college student. The 2021 UFEA Scholarship winner is Alyssa Nourie from NCWHS, daughter of UFEA members Jason and Julie Nourie.
Alyssa plans for a future career in art, either teaching art or creating her own artwork. She will be working to obtain her Associates Degree before going to art school and shared “with the help and inspiration of my current and past Unit 5 teachers, they have encouraged me to discover my own unique art style that I use to tell my own stories or the stories of others.”
The Impact Scholarship
The Impact Scholarship is awarded to a Unit 5 senior who demonstrates the need for financial assistance and plans to continue their education after high school at a college, a trade school, or in the military. The 2021 Impact Scholarship winner is Allison Henrichsmeyer from NCHS.
Allison plans on a future as a political science professor or high school social studies teacher. She is thankful for her 8th grade social studies teacher, Mrs. Ritchason, who “inspired my love of history though engaging lessons about everything from victory garden so the Little Rock Nine.”
