UFEA Voter Guide: 2018

October 9, 2018 by UFEA

Essentially every decision that gets made that effects educators and our students gets made by an elected official — from the Federal government, down to our local school board.

That’s why we are politically engaged and active. That’s why we stay informed and get involved. That’s why we interview candidates and make recommendations about who we believe the best choices are for public education. And, it’s why we vote.

The stakes have never been higher for our students and public education in Illinois. Keep reading to find out about the recommended candidates on your ballot. These recommendations were made by local IEA members, just like you, at IPACE Recommendation Meetings over the past several months!

OTHER ISSUES & SAMPLE BALLOTS

McLean County

  • If you live in McLean County, there will be two advisory questions on the ballot. Neither are binding. They have been placed on the ballot by the County Board. One asks about Term Limits. The other asks about Pensions.
  • We would encourage our membership to be opposed to the advisory question about pensions.  Some might interpret this to be related to a “pension cost shift”. The IEA is opposed to a cost shift that would divert local resources away from our schools and send those dollars to Springfield to help pay the State’s pension responsibilities.

Bloomington

  • If you live in Bloomington, those questions will be on the ballot as well as a proposition regarding the Bloomington Election Commission.
  • Our union takes no position on the question, but we want to make sure our members who live in Bloomington understand the question, which on the ballot will read “Shall the city election law be rejected?”. The law in question is the law that created the Bloomington Election Commission – so think of the question like “Should the Bloomington Election Commision be dissolved?” instead of “Shall the city election law be rejected?”
  • YES = Dissolve the BEC |  NO = Keep the BEC
